The Tobi Asanoha pattern meaning
“hemp leaf”, has been used in Japanese textiles for centuries. Geometric and radiant,
the design is made from overlapping diamonds that radiate outward in six directions, echoing the structure of the hemp plant.
As a Moyozashi sashiko pattern, Asanoha is built from a series of continuous, flowing lines that interlock across a grid, requiring focus, precision,
and a practiced stitch rhythm.
It’s seen as a symbol of vitality, growth, and protection.
This is an ideal pattern for those ready to deepen their understanding of Sashiko’s structure, flow, and cultural roots.
Whether you’re comfortable with hand-stitching or have completed my Beginner Sashiko Workshop, this workshop is designed to help you expand your skills and create a Sashiko project.
Over the course of three live online sessions,
we’ll dive deeper into Japanese hand embroidery and slowly bring to life the Tobi Asanoha (hemp leaf) pattern, one of the most iconic and beloved Moyozashi (continuous line) sashiko designs.
The project is meditative, challenging in a
deeply satisfying way, and rewarding :
a large, hand-stitched textile that you can wear, display, or use, thanks to the Japanese Furoshiki wrapping technique, which transforms your finished piece into a versatile, soft-structured bag.

You’ll receive a complete materials kit shipped to your home, containing:

A large piece of blue cotton, hand-prepared with the pre-marked Tobi Asanoha pattern for stitching

A skein of Sashiko thread of 100m in an off white color

Two Sashiko needles

A leather handle to transform your finished piece into a bag

A digital illustrated handbook with stitch guides, pattern layout, and Furoshiki folding tips
However, you will need these small tools at your disposal :
A pair of scissors
A ruler
A marking tool of your choice
And of course a computer with a microphone and camera
