An ongoing textile research project exploring the invisible time, labour and craftsmanship contained within handmade objects.
Unseen Hours explores the relationship between the visible object and the invisible labour embedded within it. Working with discarded textiles and traditional craft techniques, Sophie Cagniart transforms existing materials through processes of dyeing, stitching, weaving and reconstruction.
The project considers what happens to the time and labour invested in an object once the making process disappears from view. Hours of repetitive gestures become absorbed into the finished surface, leaving only traces of the work that produced it.
Through textile transformation, Unseen Hours asks how craftsmanship, time and material history influence the way we perceive and value handmade objects.
