exploring themlong after the workshop ends.

What makes this workshop different

This is not a “quick craft class.” It’s a complete introduction to Sashiko as a technique and tradition.
Together, we’ll explore:

  • The history and cultural context of Sashiko.

  • The materials — which fabrics, threads, and needles work best, and why.

  • How to use each tool in the most efficient, traditional way.

  • The structure of Sashiko patterns: how to read, deconstruct, and rebuild them.

By the end, you won’t just follow a design — you’ll understand how Sashiko works, and you’ll feel confident continuing on your own.

Who This Workshop Is For and Why join?

-

This workshop is for anyone who wants to

move beyond copying ready-made patterns and

begin truly understanding Moyōzashi Sashiko.

If you’ve ever traced a template without fully

knowing how the pattern was constructed,

this session will change that.

You’ll learn how the grids work,

how proportions shape the design, and

how continuous running stitches flow

through each motif.

It’s for stitchers who want more creative freedom,

who want to draw their own grids, build their

own stencils, and approach patterns with clarity

instead of guesswork.

. What we focus on here is structure, rhythm, and logic, the foundation that allows you to approach complex Moyōzashi patterns independently and confidently.

By the end of the workshop,

you won’t just recognize these patterns.

You’ll understand how they are built,  how they move, and how to recreate them on your own fabric

without relying on pre-made transfers.

What you'll learn

-

By the end of this workshop, you’ll be able to:

Understand the difference between Moyozashi and other Sashiko patterns

Draw grids for Moyozashi patterns by hand

Create your own stencils to transfer patterns to fabric

Trace and plan eight different Moyozashi patterns

Read and plan efficient stitch sequences for continuous lines

Apply tips and techniques to make your embroidery flow smoothly

Materials you’ll need

-

Note: No stitching is required during this workshop.

We will work on paper to trace grids and construct patterns step by step, building your own collection of templates. You’ll learn how these paper designs translate directly onto fabric,

so you can confidently transfer and stitch them later on your own garments.

Finished fabric swatches will be shown as examples.

  2. Ruler, Protractor and straightedge
