The Tobi Asanoha pattern meaning

“hemp leaf”, has been used in Japanese textiles for centuries. Geometric and radiant,

the design is made from overlapping diamonds that radiate outward in six directions, echoing the structure of the hemp plant.

As a Moyozashi sashiko pattern, Asanoha is built from a series of continuous, flowing lines that interlock across a grid, requiring focus, precision,

and a practiced stitch rhythm.

It’s seen as a symbol of vitality, growth, and protection.

This is an ideal pattern for those ready to deepen their understanding of Sashiko’s structure, flow, and cultural roots.

Whether you’re comfortable with hand-stitching or have completed my Beginner Sashiko Workshop, this workshop is designed to help you expand your skills and create a Sashiko project.

Over the course of three live online sessions,

we’ll dive deeper into Japanese hand embroidery and slowly bring to life the Tobi Asanoha (hemp leaf) pattern, one of the most iconic and beloved Moyozashi (continuous line) sashiko designs.

The project is meditative, challenging in a

deeply satisfying way, and rewarding :

a large, hand-stitched textile that you can wear, display, or use, thanks to the Japanese Furoshiki wrapping technique, which transforms your finished piece into a versatile, soft-structured bag.

What you'll learn

  • How to embroider the Tobi Asanoha (hemp leaf) motif, a traditional Moyozashi pattern formed from continuous interlocking lines

  • How to plan and execute a large-scale sashiko project with symmetry, rhythm, and care

  • Techniques for maintaining consistency and flow throughout the stitching process

  • How to use Furoshiki folding methods to transform your work into a reusable fabric bag

  • Finishing and caring for your Sashiko textile
