In-Person Workshop
A complete Introduction to Sashiko

History, Techniques, Patterns, and Hands-On Stitching

Next date : Saturday, 13th of September 2025

Sign-ups are open until 12th of September

What makes this workshop different

This is not a “quick craft class.” It’s a complete introduction to Sashiko as a technique and tradition.
Together, we’ll explore:

  • The history and cultural context of Sashiko.

  • The materials — which fabrics, threads, and needles work best, and why.

  • How to use each tool in the most efficient, traditional way.

  • The structure of Sashiko patterns: how to read, deconstruct, and rebuild them.

By the end, you won’t just follow a design — you’ll understand how Sashiko works, and you’ll feel confident continuing on your own.

Step into the world of Sashiko

-

Sashiko is more than a stitch,

it’s a rhythm, a way of slowing down,

and a practice that connects us to

centuries of Japanese craft.

In this 3-hour introduction workshop,

you’ll discover the beauty of Sashiko embroidery. From its origins in Edo-period Japan,

where it was used to mend and strengthen fabric, to its modern revival as both

art form and act of sustainability,

Sashiko carries a story worth stitching into.

Level : Suitable for complete beginners

The Project & The Outcome

In this workshop, you’ll begin your Sashiko journey by working on small denim patches. Together, we’ll focus on one patch, slowly building a traditional Hitomezashi pattern stitch by stitch. The aim is not speed, but rhythm. Finding the quiet flow of the needle and truly understanding the technique and hand movements.

To support you in this, you’ll receive a complete kit, carefully prepared and shipped to you in advance. Inside, you’ll find three pre-marked denim patches, Sashiko thread, and the essential tools to get you started. During the workshop, we’ll work on one patch together; the remaining two are yours to continue practicing afterward,

giving you space to explore at your own pace.

By the end, you’ll walk away not just with stitches, but with a true understanding of

the technique and the confidence to carry it forward into your own projects.

After the workshop, you will:

- Know the History of Sashiko and its traditions

- Feel confident with the technique with a full understanding of the tools and materials and how each is used in the traditional method.

- understand how to construct patterns and get inspired to make your own designs.

- Be able to finish your patch independently and have two additional patches ready

to keep exploring at your own pace.

-Know how to repair or embellish fabric using Sashiko, with the ability to explore

new patterns on your own.

What’s included in your kit :

-1 skein of Sashiko thread

-2 Sashiko needles

-3 denim patches, pre-marked with grids

- A leather thimble

(Any sort of small optional equipment will be provided
